Electronic Filing Services Are Taxpayers’ First Choice!

This tax season, the IRS has devised a plethora of useful virtual features to facilitate the taxpaying process greatly. Tara Lynn Wagner of NY1 reports as follows:

“Once again, it’s that time of year when people’s thoughts turn toward taxes. The good news is that help has arrived for all those persistent procrastinators, however.

In 2012, taxes will not be officially overdue until after April 17 – two days later than the traditional filing deadline. This is per IRS spokeswoman Dianne Besunder.

Ms. Besunder further advised that prompt filing yields correspondingly faster refund … Read the rest

The AMT or Alternative Minimum Tax is that rare thing – a part of the tax code that most people agree on irrespective of their ideological or political leanings. It was originally established in order to make certain that the richest citizens in the US were going to be made to pay their own fair share of the national tax revenues, but most people now think that it is unfair it has not been adjusted along with inflation which in effect means that an ever growing percentage of not quite as wealthy Americans are falling within its remit and finding … Read the rest

FreeTaxUSA can now support the 42 US states where a state tax return is required. Additionally it can also support the District of Columbia, Vermont, and Montana. Taxpayers residing in states that do not require state returns still have the option of filing a 100% free federal return on the FreeTaxUSA website. Each year, there are been new states added, with this being the first tax season in which all 42 of the states are available. This means that more taxpayers can file their state taxes electronic than in the past with this great online tax product.

As the April deadline approaches and you have already sent your tax return in the mail to the IRS or you have completed a return on the computer, the only way to change the tax return is to file an amended tax return. If you have filed with FreeTaxUSA, you can sign in with your account and correct the return.

The Internal Revenue Service does not let you do an e-file amended return. Your only choice is to prepare and send back the amended return.

If you completed your original tax return through another source besides FreeTaxUSA, you can … Read the rest

A year ago, Congress lifted restrictions on Roth IRAs, allowing anyone to convert an IRA or 401(k) account. Previously, you could not convert to a Roth IRA if you made more than $100,000 per year.

Another change is that taxpayers can allow grandchildren to inherit $5 million (an increase from the previous limit of $3.5 million) before they will incur the tax on skipping generations. The exemption will drop to $1 million in 2013.

Many choose to give money to their grandchildren because they will get a greater return. In fact, a one-year old with a Roth account could get … Read the rest

While most people are focused on their 2010 tax returns, there is tension in the market. An antitrust lawsuit was filed on Monday by the U.S. Department of Justice in a move to prevent the acquisition of TaxACT by H&R Block. Talk of the $287.5 million deal has led to fears of increased costs and an obstruction of improvements in the market without a third major player to drive competition.

These fears surfaced after H&R Block (Kansas City) revealed its intention in October to merge TaxACT and H&R Block AT Home, creating a division that would be headed by … Read the rest
